While blogging has become a mainstream tool in today’s technological culture, its use has been given very little thought in organization functions. As organizational structures are changing, this relatively new information technology can benefit the company by being a cornerstone to these new structural developments. This new platform would promote company belonging, improve communication within the organization and increase communication with customers and other stakeholders. Blogging in the workplace helps develop better relationships among coworkers as a sense of community is developed. Blogs also allow for better horizontal communication linkages which are becoming more necessary as organizations are moving always from functional structures ands towards horizontal structures. Thirdly, blogs can be used externally and communicate important product information for other stakeholders who do not work for the organization.
Since blogs have been known to be user-friendly and democratic, users will relate this feeling to organization blogs as well. This chatty medium will allow coworkers to share information freely while producing creative thoughts in a familiar environment (Goodfellow & Graham, 2007). This easy to use format will allow employees and employers to frequently post while spending a minimum amount of time and effort. Information and idea sharing also allows workers to relate to one another generating the feeling of belonging and community (Brzozowki, Sandholm, & Hogg, 2009). This sense of community in the workplace is proven to be a powerful motivator for further participation in discussion groups. Blogs are therefore able to improve the intellectual reputation of a user while developing the trust between those working in the organization. As social influences are becoming more and more important in today’s culture, it is important for people to be able to relate to others (Brzozowki, Sandholm, & Hogg, 2009). This will generate a feeling of loyalty to the company and those that they work with similar to the feeling of patriotism. The social capital gained from this information technology is able to improve a employee’s job satisfaction.
Horizontal communication linkages are also becoming increasingly important in large firms with a need for horizontal coordination between different departments (Daft, 2007). The move towards coordination across departments allows for a better understanding of organization functions while empowering employees to make some of their own decisions. Blogs will allow the sharing of information with co-workers in the same functional department to share specialized knowledge about their specific department allowing economies of scale (Daft, 2007). It also allows for information to travel from different functional teams to workers that would not normally get in the workplace. A widespread of information from different divisions permits workers to see where their work fits into the bigger picture of the organization. Questions and comments are also subject to quick feedback when posted on a blog which maximizes collective expertise while generating an abundance of creative ideas (Goodfellow & Graham, 2007). Organizational blogs also supports the communication of intelligence across geographic borders that would otherwise be difficult without the use of information technology. The accessibility and availability of a blog will greatly increase the efficiency of an organization in informing workers of how to best do their job while creating an organization that is responsive to the environment (Daft, 2007). Best of all, the money needed to set up a blog is inexpensive and not very time consuming (Boothby, 2007). While it might take the general population to get used to the habit of using this interface, blogging requires a minimal amount of learning with sustainable results. In order to motivate the usage of blogs, it has been shown that managers who contribute to blogs inspire others to do the same fueling participation (Brzozowki, Sandholm, & Hogg, 2009). Feedback is another strong motivators as it assures writers that their thoughts are relevant and of interest to others.
